If you’re looking for a fun, socially distant activity to share with your kids this weekend, join Kelly Pinho, Tina Agati and me in Hamilton Park for the inaugural weekend of the Waterbury Reads Storywalk®!
The Waterbury Reads team is pleased to announce a novel way to bring books to young children beginning Memorial Day weekend. StoryWalks® are a free and fun way to share books while enjoying the outdoors.
The Waterbury Reads StoryWalk® project is made possible with funding from the Elisha Leavenworth Foundation and support from the Office of Mayor O’Leary, Waterbury Parks Department, Waterbury Public Schools, Barnes & Noble of Waterbury, and BTS Graphics & Printing of Oakville.
Waterbury Reads is a program of the Spirit of Waterbury Committee and a partner of Waterbury P.A.L. By providing free books to local children, Waterbury Reads strives to spark a lifelong love of reading. While the program is on break from distributing books during the COVID-19 crisis, these StoryWalks® will provide a family-friendly way to encourage reading.
Each StoryWalk® will feature pages from a children’s picture book that are laminated onto signs and then Waterbury Reads volunteers will place them along an outdoor path. Most of the books are for children ages 2 to 7 and the stories will change weekly at each location.
Waterbury Reads StoryWalks® will be on display from 9am-3pm beginning on Saturday, May 23 in Hamilton Park and will continue through the summer. Check the schedule below but note that days and times are subject to change and weather conditions may impact the plan. Updates will be posted on the Waterbury Reads Instagram and Facebook page.
Hamilton Park: Saturdays and Wednesdays; Fulton Park: Sundays and Wednesdays; Jonathan Reed Elementary School: Mondays and Thursdays; Washington Park: Tuesdays and Fridays.
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
