HARTFORD – On Friday, State Representative Holly Cheeseman (R-37) was appointed Ranking Member of the General Assembly’s Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee by House Republican Leader-elect State Representative Vincent Candelora (R-86). A Ranking Member serves as the leader of the minority party in committee meetings and works with the Committee Leadership to bring forward legislation.

“As Connecticut navigates its course out of the pandemic, I look forward to working with committee members and leadership, and the governor’s administration, to craft responsible and prudent fiscal policy. Our residents and businesses deserve no less,” said Rep. Cheeseman.

“Few among us would say they hear from constituents and business owners who appreciate the tax climate in Connecticut–in fact, more often than not we’re told our state is unaffordable,” Rep. Candelora said. “Holly not only empathizes with that sentiment, she has a real understanding of the policies that are driving the problem. Representative Cheeseman has spent considerable time arguing against new tax hikes, and her ability to communicate the real-word impact of increasingly complex revenue-generating schemes has made the work of those who introduce them much tougher. I look forward to the common-sense influence Holly will have on this committee, particularly during a pandemic that’s squeezed everyone’s finances.”

The Finance Committee regulates all matters related to state finances, taxes, fees and borrowing. Additionally, the committee oversees the Department of Revenue services and employer contributions to the state’s unemployment compensation fund. The Ranking Member of the Finance Committee also serves as a member of the State’s Bond Commission which approves funding requests and bond sales. The current Ranking Member, Rep. Christopher Davis (R-57) did not seek re-election.

Rep. Cheeseman noted, “It is an honor and privilege to be asked to serve as House Republican Ranking Member on the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee. I want to thank House Republican Leader Candelora for his faith in me in offering me this position. I also want to thank Representative Christopher Davis for his sterling work as ranking member these past several years; he leaves big shoes to fill.”

Rep. Cheeseman was first elected in 2016 and has served as a member of the Finance Committee for two terms. During the 2019-2020 legislative term, Rep. Cheeseman was Ranking Member of the General Law Committee.
