The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that they will be holding a public information meeting at the East Lyme Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. on April 4, 2018, regarding the proposed replacement of a Route 1 bridge over an unnamed brook in East Lyme.

The existing 72-inch wide by 44-inch tall asphalt coated corrugated steel plate pipe culvert would be replaced with a 5-foot by 10-foot precast concrete box culvert with precast concrete wing walls. The culvert invert will be buried 1 foot to allow for natural streambed material to be placed inside the structure. Solid concrete parapets with concrete barrier walls will be installed on either side of the roadway and the guiderail will be attached and extended as required at each approach.

The structure will remain relatively in the same location and the existing roadway profile will remain unchanged. The existing underground utilities at the site will also be maintained, and aerial facilities will be relocated or use alley arms to provide the required clearance for construction equipment.

Construction is anticipated to be performed in Fall 2019 during a weekend closure at the site. Traffic will be detoured utilizing Route 1 and I-95. Additional off-peak lane closures will be utilized before and after the detour period in order to perform tasks as needed.

The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $700,000, 80 percent of which will be paid for with federal funds and 20 percent with state funds.

Plans of the proposed project will be on display at the meeting for public review. More detailed information is available at the Department’s Office of Engineering, 2800 Berlin Turnpike, Newington, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays.
