Cheeseman Working with State Group to Promote Mystic Area Economy
HARTFORD- As a new member of the Working Group to Develop an Economic Development and Tourism Plan for The Greater Mystic Area of the Towns of Groton, New London and Stonington, State Rep. Holly Cheeseman (R-37) attended Wednesday’s meeting in hopes to construct an economic development and tourism plan for the greater Mystic area.
Rep. Cheeseman supported legislation last session that Governor Lamont signed into law creating the working group. The hope is that the working group will bring a positive impact across the State as it helps position Southeastern CT as an important hub for tourism that connects people with cultural, historical, and educational assets.
“One of the responsibilities of the working group is to examine the existing infrastructure and recommend ways to improve it for residents and visitors alike. That will be key as we plan for more robust growth in southeastern Connecticut, said Rep. Cheeseman. “We need to ensure the long-term prosperity of our region’s tourism sector. Anything we can do to encourage visitors to the area provide a much-needed boost to the local economies; hotels, restaurants and other venues.”
In 2023, USA Today ranked Mystic as the fourth top tourist destination in the U.S. and it was the only city in New England to make the list.
