Cheeseman Named a Children’s Champion in 2024

EAST LYME- State Rep. Holly Cheeseman (R-37) was named a 2024 Children’s Champion by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance in a presentation Friday at Carelot Early Learning Center in East Lyme.

The award recognizes people who’ve made “significant contributions to improving the lives of young children in Connecticut.”

Rep. Cheeseman was presented the recognition by Merrill Gay, the Executive Director at Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance for her dedication to improving outcomes in the areas of education, health, and the economic security for young children and their families. Susan Purcell, the Executive Director of Carelot Early Learning Center was also on hand.

“I am humbled to receive this recognition specifically for my bi-partisan work on landmark early childhood care and education legislation, which includes a multifaceted approach to providing quality and affordable childcare to families across Connecticut,” said Rep. Cheeseman. Parents need assistance and this new law looks to provide some financial relief and will also help our business community find the employees they need for their industries.”

The legislation will launch a Tri-Share Child Care Matching Program serving New London County, where childcare costs are shared equally between participating employers, employees, and the state. The bill also establishes a 25-member advisory commission to review and report on the Early Childhood Care and Education Fund’s financial health and status, submit, and update a ten-year plan to the legislature on Fund expenditures to ensure the longevity and sustainability of our early childhood education and childcare system.
