Cheeseman Hails DOT Project To Fix Exit 74 on I-95

EAST LYME- Today State Rep. Holly Cheeseman (R-37) attended a news conference and groundbreaking along with Governor Lamont, other state and local officials, transportation engineers and workers from the state Department of Transportation announcing that DOT is starting construction on the I-95 Exit 74 project, which will involve reconfiguring the interchange to improve safety, adding sidewalks and shoulders to Route 161 to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety and mobility, and fixing vertical clearance issues on the bridge over Route 161.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will be replacing Bridge No. 00250 (I-95 over Route 161) due to its poor condition. In addition, the improvements on Route 161 (Flanders Road) will address traffic operational concerns and improve the safety for all roadway users including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists in the vicinity of the interchange ramps.

DOT Project No. 0044-0156 is scheduled for completion in July of 2027. The project is being administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2, Norwich.

LANE CLOSURE INFO
Motorists can expect various lane closures on I-95 during off-peak hours. Detours of Exit 74 and Exit 75 will be required to perform critical work. Lane closures on Route 161 will also be required during off peak hours. Route 161 will also experience some detours to construct the new bridge.

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity and be guided by Construction signs and lane devices for lane closures.
Follow-up information will be transmitted to detail specific lane closures and detours as needed.

.

The goal of the project is to improve the safety on Interstate 95 at Exit 74 and address traffic operational concerns between Exits 74 and 75.

Rep. Cheeseman said, “This project will speed up traffic, allow for easier highway access and will save lives with a safer highway construction build.”
