Capitol Update 7.1.2020
Posted on July 1, 2020
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I am writing with a quick update on school reopening plans for the next academic year, two announcements from the Department of Revenue services, and a conversation with Sherrie Weiss about food security.
I hope you stay healthy, safe, and have a pleasant Fourth of July weekend.
School Reopening Guidelines
Last week, Governor Lamont announced a basic framework for reopening schools in the fall. The State Department of Education (CSDE) issued more detailed guidance yesterday afternoon. For more details, click the button below:
On Friday, the state’s Department of Revenue Services (DRS) announced the resumption of the 10-cent plastic bag tax beginning July 1st. The governor suspended the tax in late March during the pandemic response.
In mid-April, DRS extended filing and payment deadlines for some state tax returns in order to align with federal changes made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those specific taxes are highlighted below:
Yesterday, I hosted a conversation with Sherrie Weiss from the Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries about food insecurity in our area and how we can help our neighbors in need.
To support those in need, checks can be sent to Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries (SSKP). In the memo write: East Lyme Food Pantry
