Key Takeaways

  • Local leaders tout cleanup as catalyst for jobs, investment, and higher property values
  • Funding targets environmental remediation to remove blight and reduce taxpayer burdens
  • Downtown revitalization aims to attract businesses, boost foot traffic, and expand the tax base

Torrington has received a major boost toward a cleaner, stronger, and more vibrant future. I’m pleased to share that the city has been awarded $1.2 million in state brownfield funding to address long-neglected properties, support downtown revitalization, and prepare key sites for redevelopment.

This investment targets some of Torrington’s most important opportunity areas—turning yesterday’s industrial sites into tomorrow’s community assets.

How the Funding Will Be Used

🔹 $800,000 – Former Torrington Company/Excelsior Needle Site (Field Street)
This funding will support environmental cleanup and demolition at the former Torrington Company/Excelsior Needle site. The project will also create new parking, helping nearby businesses and improving access to the downtown area.

🔹 $200,000 – Former Torrington Standard Plant (Norwood Street)
These funds will be used for environmental assessments, a critical first step in preparing this site for future redevelopment and attracting new investment.

🔹 $200,000 – Downtown Brownfield Planning (North Main Street)
This investment will support comprehensive brownfield planning focused on the north end of Main Street, helping guide redevelopment efforts through 2040 and ensuring growth aligns with the community’s long-term vision.

Why This Matters

Brownfield funding does more than clean up old sites—it unlocks potential. By addressing environmental challenges, Torrington can attract new businesses, support existing ones, improve public spaces, and create opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

This is an important step forward for our city, and I look forward to seeing these projects move from planning to progress. Together, we’re building a stronger future for Torrington.
