Despite recent pushback against new tariffs, Connecticut Democrats are currently debating a proposed 2-cent-per-ounce tax on beverages containing sugar and artificial sweeteners. If passed, this would increase the cost of sodas, juices, and other sweetened drinks.

For example, a 12-ounce soda would see an additional 24-cent taxβ€”on top of the 10-cent bottle redemption fee and any applicable sales tax.

What’s Included?

The proposed tax applies to drinks containing:

  • Sugar (e.g., cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, fruit juice concentrate)
  • Artificial or low-calorie sweeteners (e.g., aspartame, sucralose, stevia, saccharin)

A public hearing was held on the bill Monday, April 14th, at the Legislative Office Building, hosted by the Finance Committee. I encourage you to share your thoughts on H.B. 7273.
