HARTFORD — Representative Pat Boyd, House Minority Leader Vincent Candelora, Senator Norm Needleman, and Senator Lisa Seminara held a Youth Camp Advocacy Day press conference on Friday. During Youth Camp Advocacy Day, attendees learn the importance of ensuring that summer camps continue to be a valuable resource for children and families across the state.

“Camp is not just a place to create memories; it’s where young people learn valuable life skills, build confidence, and form lifelong friendships,” said Rep. Boyd. “By supporting summer camps, we are investing in our kids and preparing them for future success.”

“The impact of our state’s diverse camp community can’t be overstated. Camps are vital economic and community partners, and, of course, are indispensable resources that make it possible for so many parents to head off to work when school isn’t session. Most important, however, is what they do for our children. Camps infuse vital, experienced-based social and leadership skills that children will use for the rest of their lives. Whenever I’m given the opportunity I enjoy encouraging my colleagues in the General Assembly to connect with camps in their district—take tours, meet staff, and see the great work that’s happening in their towns,” said House Minority Leader Candelora.

“Summer camps are a valuable experience for children when they are out of school – not only for supporting their overall education but also for strengthening their social skills and emotional well-being. We have support available that makes summer camps accessible to families of all income levels, and I strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of the many opportunities we have in Connecticut,” said Governor Lamont.

“This summer, around our state, our many great camps will provide education, leadership, and recreational opportunities to countless children, helping foster their skills and their growth,” said Sen. Needleman. “Many of us can likely recall the benefits we gained from visiting camps in our state. I’m so proud to give them my full support to continue fostering the best from today’s youth.”

“It is a pleasure to be a part of Youth Camp Advocacy Day, and I am honored to highlight the incredible impact that camps have on the developmental and educational phases of a young person’s life,” said Sen. Seminara. “Youth camps provide a vast amount of resources that not only better the quality of life for the child but also partner with their parents and/or guardian to provide a memorable experience. Through these experiences, campers gain independence and confidence that will be with them for a lifetime while equipping them for the years ahead.”

“Connecticut’s youth camps provide children with recreational and educational experiences while ensuring their health and safety. Children will take these rich and rewarding experiences with them throughout life. We at the OEC appreciate the hard work and dedication of youth camp leaders and their staff who contribute to the physical, mental, and social development of our children,” said Commissioner Beth Bye, Office of Early Childhood.

“There is no doubt that camp has an extraordinary impact on all the campers, but it is also transformative and provides a rich experience for all of the staff that works there,” said Alan Pender, President of Connecticut Camping Association and Camp Director of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. “They learn so many new leadership skills, such as decision-making, communication, and problem-solving, which are all essential for the next chapter of their lives.”

“For over 160 years, New England has provided opportunities for children, young adults, and families through the camp experience. While the traditions and identity of camp is constantly developing, the foundational elements remain as valuable as ever. Camp is a place for folks to meet new people, try new things, and grow as individuals while being part of a community. We sincerely appreciate the spotlight and support days like this provide to our industry,” said Michele Rowcliffe, Executive Director of American Camp Association New England.

Youth Camp Advocacy Day aims to inform individuals about the economic, educational, and human impact of the over 513 licensed camps in Connecticut.
