Rep. Callahan Statement on Bottle Bill Redemption Fraud and Abuse

Rep. Callahan Statement on Bottle Bill Redemption Fraud and Abuse

Key Takeaways

  • Rep. Callahan decries widespread bottle bill redemption fraud harming consumers and small businesses.
  • Lawmakers push for policy changes to close redemption loopholes
  • Callahan calls for return to lower redemption charge

"The legislature passed a bill a few years ago doubling the bottle redemption fee from 5-cents to 10-cents.

I warned then that it would cause issues in border towns with people who purchased bottles out of state, with a 5-cent fee, returning them here for a profit. Not only has this fraud and abuse happened, but it's even worse than I predicted. Many of our redemption centers across Connecticut are redeeming at 150% leading to losses of $14 million.

While the legislature will try to fix this issue next week, it's just a band aid on the problem. Until we go back to 5-cents, this will keep being an issue."
