Sherman—State Representative Patrick Callahan (R-108) presented citations to Sherman School students today in recognition of their academic achievement. Sarabelle Hafer, Eliana Ostrosky, and Audrey Wiggins were recipients of the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. The President’s Award for Academic Achievement went to Casey Witt. The students were previously recognized during a school-wide ceremony.

“This recognition speaks to the fine work these students have done in class, and to the leaders they are in their school. This honor reflects their hard work and perseverance. I’m excited to see what they will do in the future,” said Callahan.

The President’s Award program was created in 1983.

To be eligible for the Educational Excellence Award, students must meet requirements, including grade point average or, school-set criteria and choice of state tests or teacher recommendations. The Educational Achievement Award recognizes students that show outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment, or intellectual development in their academic subjects but do not meet the criteria for the Educational Excellence Award. Its purpose is to encourage and reward students who give their best effort, often in the face of special obstacles.

Callahan also offered advice to the students in their future endeavors.

“You, as student leaders, are well-rounded individuals. If you notice kids struggling socially or academically help them out, being nice goes a long way to making the school environment better for everyone,” added Callahan.

State Senator Stephen Harding (R-30) also attended the citation presentation.
