Rep. Callahan on Issues Before Environment Committee

During a public hearing this week, Rep. Patrick Callahan (R-108) raised concerns with a new insurance surcharge fee for environmental measures included in a bill on riparian buffer zones.

“I don’t think this provision should be in the bill, in fact it should be before a different committee of cognizance,” said Rep. Callahan.

The Committee also heard testimony on a proposal to enforce the prohibition on cross-border bottle redemptions.

“I warned when Connecticut raised the bottle redemption fee from 5-cents to 10-cents that grocery stores near the NY, MA and RI borders would be inundated with returns of bottles bought out of state. I was also concerned about DEEP being tasked with enforcement of fraud,” said Rep. Callahan.
