Hartford – State Representative Patrick Callahan (R-New Fairfield) was sworn into his first term on Wednesday, January 6, at the State Capitol. Opening day ceremonies were held outdoors on the Capitol grounds, allowing all members of the House of Representatives a safe, socially distant space to kick-off the 2021 legislative session.

After being sworn-in, legislators participated remotely from their respective offices to act on the General Assembly’s operating rules for the upcoming year. Callahan voted in favor of the new rules, which were approved by the House of Representatives in its first order of business of the new session.

“Connecticut residents are in dire need of the legislature to get back to work and I am incredibly proud to be part of it. Our main goal will be providing adequate pandemic relief, by creating policies that allocate supportive resources to our state’s businesses so that they can re-open and life can go back to normal,” said Callahan. “For too long, the governor has had control of our state government. More voices should be invited to the table, and as our community’s representative I am eager to pave the way for all stakeholders to be heard.”

The governor has been running the state via Executive Order since last spring, when the legislature abruptly adjourned its business due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Those powers are set to end in a couple of weeks and the legislature will return to its policy-setting diligence.

Callahan will serve on the Education, Environment, and Judiciary committees. Organizational zoom meetings are being scheduled over the coming days as the committees begin to review various proposals.
