October is domestic violence awareness month. Advocacy efforts to decrease incidences of domestic violence have made a significantly positive impact on how the legislature has responded to this issue. Consequently, the state continues to make progress in curbing incidences of domestic violence.

Earlier in the year, I proudly supported a new law that expands the legal definition of ‘domestic violence’ to include coercive behavior. Too often, victims of domestic violence crimes feel trapped in a helpless situation. The new definition provides greater legal flexibility to those impacted. There are also provisions within the new law that make resources immediately available to those in need to minimize financial stress, a limiting factor that clouds one’s decision-making during times of crisis.
