New Milford Day Celebrated at the State Capitol, Police Aviation Unit Honored

Hartford, CT – Today marked New Milford Day at the Capitol, a special occasion dedicated to celebrating the rich culture, innovation, and community spirit of New Milford, Connecticut. The event brought together local businesses, first responders, and civic leaders to showcase everything the town has to offer.
The celebration was organized by the New Milford legislative delegation, including State Representatives Billy Buckbee, Jason Buchsbaum, Pat Callahan, and State Senator Stephen Harding.

“I really want to thank all of our participants that took part in today’s event,” said Rep. Billy Buckbee. “New Milford continues to be a shining example of community and collaboration, and it was a privilege to share that spirit with the rest of the state.”
“I want to thank all of the businesses, many who I visit regularly, that made the trip to Hartford to show off why New Milford is a well worth a trip to Western Connecticut,” said Rep. Patrick Callahan. “It was a privilege to publicly honor members of the Police Department who volunteer with the Aviation unit for their humanitarian efforts in North Carolina. They truly exemplify the community policing that make the town great.”
“Fresh from GOAT Days held locally in New Milford, I was pleased to be able to show off some of the businesses in town,” said Rep. Jason Buchsbaum. “It was also great to welcome our police department and to be able to honor them for their recent humanitarian mission in North Carolina. I am privileged to represent New Milford in Hartford and it was a wonderful day showcasing all that New Milford has to offer.”
“So many people at the State Capitol look forward to New Milford Day,” said Sen. Stephen Harding. “It’s a day to showcase how special New Milford is to the entire state. It’s about New Milford pride, and we are so fortunate to be a part of it. We thank everyone who joined us, and we are already looking forward to next year.”

A highlight of the event was the recognition of the New Milford Police Department’s Aviation Unit for its outstanding service during Hurricane Helene relief efforts in North Carolina. The unit received Official State Citations for their bravery and professionalism.
In October 2024, the team volunteered to provide critical logistical support to communities devastated by the storm. Many residents were completely cut off from essential resources such as food, water, and medicine. Thanks to the swift response of the Aviation Unit, numerous individuals were sustained until the National Guard was able to restore access by reopening roadways and infrastructure.

Civilian members of the unit who were recognized but not present to receive their citations:

- Tactical Flight Officer Steve Shabet
The day served as a proud reminder of New Milford’s contributions to Connecticut’s economy, public safety, and community life.
