Governor Indicates Electric Vehicle Mandate is off the table; Statement from the Ranking Member of the Energy Committee

As the Ranking Member of the legislature’s Energy Committee, I have heard loud and clear from residents of New Milford and communities across Connecticut: they are not ready for an electric vehicle mandate. Over the past several months, my office has been flooded with emails, phone calls, and in-person conversations expressing strong concerns about the feasibility and cost implications of such a mandate.

I am pleased to see that Governor Lamont has listened to these concerns and has formally withdrawn the proposal for an electric vehicle mandate. This decision reflects the governor’s understanding that sound public policy must take into account the needs and realities of the people it affects.

This move also signals a positive direction toward greater financial relief for Connecticut families who are already facing significant economic challenges. Instead of pushing mandates that would place unnecessary burdens on consumers, we can now focus on policies that encourage innovation, reduce costs, and allow residents to make transportation choices that work best for their individual circumstances.

As we enter the upcoming legislative session, I am committed to working alongside my colleagues to explore alternative approaches that support sustainable energy goals while ensuring that Connecticut families are not unfairly burdened. Policies that prioritize common sense and economic responsibility will help us achieve both our environmental goals and the financial well-being of our residents.
