HARTFORD – State Rep. Bill Buckbee (R-New Milford) proposed a concept that would require buildings that utilize combustible gas be equipped with a leak detector. The bill, H.B. 6848 An Act Concerning Gas Leak Detectors in New and Existing Construction, was before the Energy & Technology during its committee meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

“This is a commonsense measure that will keep people safe,” said Buckbee, who previously has served the New Milford community as a firefighter. “Having seen first-hand what can happen when gas leaks go undetected, this is a small, yet proactive measure that will prevent incidences from occurring frequently. Gas leaks can be extremely dangerous and can lead to explosions.”

Members of the committee were amenable to Buckbee’s proposed concept. There was little discussion on the bill and it was unanimously moved forward by the committee.

According to Buckbee, the bill will now go to the House Floor for its action. Buckbee is encouraged based on the bipartisan support it received by the committee, that it will be called by the Speaker for favorable action.
