Buckbee, Miner Hail Allocation of State Grant to Improve New Milford Senior Center

New Milford – New Milford’s senior center will benefit from a recent round of Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grants. It was recently announced that $11 million will be allocated to 94 small towns across the state, including New Milford. According to State Rep. Billy Buckbee (R-New Milford) and State Senator Craig Miner (R-Litchfield), $105,200 has been approved for the design and engineering of a new kitchen facility at the senior center.

“Investments in the institutions of our community are so vitally important right now,” said Rep. Buckbee. “The senior center has provided many with so much during the pandemic and it’s critical that the resources be available to make it a quality place for our elderly neighbors to utilize. I commend the allocation and appreciate the timing of it. New Milford’s budget has been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, so this grant is welcomed economic relief.”

Sen. Miner said, “In a time of a state and nationwide pandemic that has disproportionately impacted our most vulnerable population—our seniors—I am pleased that the state recognizes the importance of maintaining the quality of services for the elderly in our community. This STEAP funding will enable New Milford to provide vital services to our senior population through the senior center in a time when its funds have been negatively impacted by the COVID pandemic.”

Towns can individually apply for STEAP grants. Local projects may be eligible for a grant if they fall within any of the following categories: new construction, expansion, renovation, or replacement for an existing facility or facilities. For additional information on the round of STEAP grants the governor’s statement can be reviewed by clicking here.
