Buckbee Increases Flag Driver’s License Accessibility for Veterans

Buckbee Increases Flag Driver’s License Accessibility for Veterans

HARTFORD – State Representative Bill Buckbee (R-New Milford) voted in favor of legislation allowing veterans in Connecticut to obtain the designated veteran’s driver’s license, with the American Flag on it, at no additional fee prior to the renewal date. The bill effectively erases the previously imposed $30.00 fee on the veteran indicator on duplicate identification card or driver’s license.

“This was a concept I had proposed individually earlier in the legislative session. The men and women who have served our great state and country have earned the right to show that they are a veteran. Allowing our veterans to have a flag on their license, at no additional charge, is the least we can do for them to show our support and gratitude for their service,” said Buckbee.

The bill garnered unanimous support when it was considered in both committees of cognizance, Veterans’ Affairs and Finance.

Buckbee explained, “I commend my legislative colleagues in recognizing the importance of this bill. The best legislative work is done in a bi-partisan manner and what we, collectively, did on this should be an example going forward.”

There are approximately 217,000 veterans across the state. While there is no additional cost for veterans to receive the veteran’s driver’s license when obtaining a license or renewing a license, this legislation will provide a mechanism for veterans who would like an updated license if it is not yet due for renewal.

After being passed in the House of Representatives, with no dissenting votes, the legislation now awaits further action in the Senate. The bill must be acted upon before the conclusion of session, Wednesday, June 7, in order for it to become law.
