Advocating for Lower Energy Costs and Greater Access to Renewable Energy in Connecticut

As part of our Public Benefits Charge, I continue to push for a change that could have a significant impact on your monthly utility bill. Right now, Connecticut’s purchasing requirements for renewable energy credits are severely limiting the market, making it harder to access affordable, clean energy options. I believe the solution is clear: we need to open the market to out-of-state renewable energy credits.

By allowing out-of-state credits, we can increase competition and drive down the costs of renewable energy. This change would create a win-win situation for both consumers and the environment. Not only would your utility bill be lower, but we would also be fostering a more competitive, sustainable energy market in Connecticut.

However, despite the clear benefits, there are significant political obstacles standing in the way. The chairs of the committee continue to claim that the process is bipartisan, yet when it comes to actually passing legislation, we’ve seen zero Republican-backed bills make it through. This is a pattern I’ve experienced first-hand with my proposal. I put forward this important bill, but it was ignored. I even proposed it as an amendment to a larger bill – and once again, it was shot down.

This isn’t about the utilities, Connecticut; this is about politics. The arrogance and ignorance that continue to dominate the discussion are costing us all. We need to recognize that these decisions have real, everyday consequences for consumers. The refusal to embrace common-sense solutions like allowing out-of-state renewable energy credits is reprehensible, and it’s something we can’t afford to ignore any longer.

It’s time to push for a future where energy costs are lower and renewable energy options are more accessible to all. Together, we can make a difference and create a more affordable, sustainable energy future for Connecticut.
