New Milford – State Rep. Bill Buckbee visited Schaghticoke Middle School on Friday afternoon to recognize the winner of the 4th annual New Milford Essay Contest. The prompt for the essay was how The Town of New Milford contributed to their lives. Students focused on one particular event or notable public figure that represents the ideals and values of the community.

This year’s winner was sixth grader, Sarah Parsard, who wrote an exceptional piece about how the Christmas season tree lighting helped her find joy in the community. This annual tradition may be taken for granted by people who have lived in New Milford their whole lives, but for Sarah, the experience of a festive gathering on a small-town New England green was new.

An excerpt from Sarah’s essay reads, “It was one of the most beautiful things I’d ever seen, seeing everyone gathered together with people they loved, seeing the tree shine bright, seeing everyone’s bright smiles.”

Rep. Buckbee went on to commend Sarah’s efforts. “This contest is structured so that students can express their feelings about our community. The number one goal for any elected official is to make their hometown a better place. Reading through the essays that were submitted, including Sarah’s, goes to show how important civic events can be. Lighting the tree on the town green is one of our most honored traditions, and I am glad the next generation wants to continue it.”
