The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offered to Connecticut residents could be impacted by the continued federal government shut down. I wanted to share some resources with you about SNAP and related assistance.

The potential impact on SNAP benefits is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. We need to work together to solve this issue. House Minority Leader Vin Candelora has proposed using funding from Connecticut's $4.3 billion Rainy Day Fund to assist families during this lapse, an immediate solution that I also support. The Rainy Day Fund is meant for this type of emergency.

In the meantime, a listing of local food pantries can be found at 211ct.org or at CT Foodshare. These pantries are working to make sure every family has what they need, especially given the current circumstances, and the lead up to the holidays.

If you’re able to, please consider donating nonperishable items, grocery store gift cards, or your time to help these local pantries.

The state Department of Social Services has useful SNAP information on their website.
