Newtown Emergency Response to Flooding

Dear Friends & Neighbors:

I hope this email finds you safe and well. The last 36 hours have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience like nothing most of us have ever seen.

I’d like to assure you that your town and state leadership teams have been in constant contact to assure your immediate safety, evaluate infrastructure damage, move forward on all repairs that can be done without outside resources, plan & execute the larger, higher-resource work ahead of us, begin, and complete those larger projects.

During the initial portion of the emergency critical information has been communicated through The Newtown Police Department and The Newtown Bee. More information will follow as waters continue to recede and we shift into recovery. The information feed I believe to be consistently efficient and timely is that on the NPD’s Facebook page

Starting with the basics, First Selectman Capeci took quick action in declaring a local State of Emergency on Sunday. Notification was distributed via Town email. Governor Lamont followed with a declared CT State of Emergency on Monday. These events put in motion a federal declaration of emergency.

This will initiate a FEMA survey of damages to determine if our weather event qualifies for federal relief assistance, which Sen. Blumenthal assured us it will. If your property incurred damage, I urge you to complete and submit a survey to Newtown Emergency Management. A link will be provided shortly.

For individuals regarding claimable property damages:

  • Residents must document damage with pictures.
  • Send pictures/information to Newtown Emergency Management
  • Local emergency management will share with state and state will complete ONE report to apply for FEMA disaster grants
  • Damage covered by individual insurance policies will not be eligible for FEMA grants- FEMA only covers uninsured damage
  • Fallen trees are NOT eligible for FEMA disaster funding

Note: Residents without flood insurance can still get assistance via FEMA disaster grant – IF FEDS APPROVE grant.

On Sunday, we had more than 40 closed roads. We ended Monday with 4 washouts, quite an improvement. Of note, Route 25 is reopened, however Route 34 will be closed for an undetermined period, so Newtown Police are encouraging residents to seek alternate routes.

Local roads are greatly improved. Again, please look to the Newtown Police Dept. for up-to-date reopened listings.

As in past emergencies, I am grateful for the organized, professional ways of our local leaders, First Responders, dispatchers (soon to be classified as First Responders), town employees, and volunteers have worked tirelessly day and night.

We are blessed to have so many in our community who put themselves in harm’s way to help others.

Local businesses providing services to assist homeowners, and all the examples of neighbors helping neighbors should remind us all of Newtown’s resiliency. It never ceases to amaze me.

As more information becomes available it will be shared through every available means. If you suffered damage, don’t forget to document losses and initiate insurance claims .

Lastly, be aware that many local roads are still in difficult shape and it may take some time before we can get back to normal. Leaving extra time in consideration of closures, especially on and leading to the Main Street/South Main portions of Route 25 will be necessary for as long as it takes to replace the Route 34 roadbed. Let a smile be your secret source of endorphins. Can’t smile in traffic? There’s always chocolate!

Be prepared to be patient with others, in-person, or behind the wheel, including abiding by posted traffic warning signs, cones and shoulders displaying emergency tape.

Final Note: This message will be one in a series from my office intended to keep you updated on what we know and learn about restoration efforts, what to expect, road and infrastructure projects, resources available, how to determine who qualifies, for what, from whom, when, and more. Progress is already underway.
