The contract awarded to former President Susan Herbst is outrageous and unacceptable for the taxpayers of Connecticut, as well as for the tuition-paying parents and students attending the University of Connecticut (UCONN).
Former UCONN President Susan Herbst is guaranteed to receive $711,000 during her 1-year sabbatical, in addition to her salary as a professor every year – in turn matching her salary to that of the highest paid faculty at UCONN. The individuals tasked with negotiating and approving this contract owe all of us an explanation that justifies these extremely generous benefits.
I for one would like answers to the following simple and logical questions:
- Is any of the money being paid for the salary of Susan Herbst coming from Connecticut taxpayers and those paying tuition?
- Why is the salary of the university’s former president guaranteed to match the salary of the highest paid faculty?
- The Hartford Courant recently reported that Herbst will be teaching only two courses for the academic year, and for this commitment she is set to receive $311,000. How many other colleges and universities provide this type of financial guarantee and how many years of teaching experience does the average individual have in order to receive this salary?
To say that I am upset is an understatement. I am fed up and outraged that the taxpayers of this state are continuously required to subsidize the costs of education, meanwhile contracts like this one are approved without any reservation.
