Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the Valley Shore YMCA and get a first-hand look into a partnership they have created with the Clinton Public Schools and Lewin G. Joel School for 60 students in grades K-4.
As part of the four-week program that runs weekdays through July, students not only get the full camp experience – archery, ropes courses, swimming, and biking, etc. they also spend two hours out of each day in a classroom setting getting academic assistance in English, Math, and Literacy.
I’d like to thank Maryann O’Donnell, Clinton Superintendent of Schools, Tony Sharillo, Chief Executive Officer of the Valley Shore YMCA, and all of the staff, teachers and counselors for their work in making this partnership not only an incredible success but one that others towns can model themselves after.
