New Laws Effective July 1, Major Public Acts

Several new laws will be taking effect on Saturday, July 1. These laws cover a range of topics, from improving accessibility of developmental programs, further protecting victims of domestic violence, to expanding the eligibility of critical health services. I have highlighted some of the major acts below and encourage you to review all the newly effective laws.

Laws Effective July 1st…

Accessing Developmental Programs – Individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities will have a better experience when applying for and engaging in state offered developmental services. These services include day programs, employment opportunities, healthcare, and housing options.

Expanding Domestic Violence Victim Protections – Those who have experienced the trauma of domestic violence need safe and stable options so they can remove themselves from a toxic environment. This new law will expand the resources available to victims, providing the necessary legal and financial assistance to those in crisis.

Fiscal Controls – The legislature extended fiscal controls that were first implemented on a bipartisan basis in 2017. Beginning on July 1, these controls will be in place for the next five years. These measures limit state spending and borrowing and increase deposits to the Budget Reserve Fund (BRF). The guardrails help ensure stability within the state budget, hedging against future recessions and made the income tax cuts possible.
