COVENTRY – State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) celebrated Read Across America Day on March 2nd, by reading to students in Mrs. Jensen’s kindergarten class at Coventry Grammar School.

In the class Rep. Ackert read four books, “I Need a Hug” by Aaron Blabey as well as three books by Mo Williems, “Edwina, the Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct,” “The Pigeon Needs a Bath!” and “The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?”

The annual tradition, promoted by the National Education Association (NEA), began in 1998 as a way to promote early childhood literacy and commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

“I was excited to read to students in person, Read Across America Day is one of my favorite activities. I greatly enjoy reading to my own grandchildren and it helps build an important foundation for succeeding in school,” said Rep. Ackert. “Every year I urge students to take time and read to their parents and grandparents.”

According to its website, the NEA seeks to build a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. For more information about this great event please visit www.nea.org/readacross.
