COVENTRY- State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) sponsored another successful flag collection this year in recognition of Flag Day. American flags that were deemed unusable were properly disposed at multiple pick-up locations across the district in Tolland, Columbia, and Coventry.

According to United States Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

The flags were ultimately retired on Flag Day at the Booth & Dimmock Library in Coventry. Commander Manny A. Rodrigues from the Coventry VFW Post, led the ceremony, and Girl Scout Morgan Bonaiuto from Columbia, had the honor of leading the pledge of allegiance.

“This year we received the most flags that this drive has ever collected,” Rep. Ackert said. “I want to thank everyone who participated in this annual retirement ceremony. I especially want to thank Coventry Boy Scout Troop 65, and the entire Coventry VFW Post.”

Rep. Ackert, local boy scouts, and the American Legion proudly did their part in offering these services last Friday.

Although an anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 was established by President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that an act of Congress designated June 14 as the official National Flag Day. 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of President Truman’s proclamation.
