WATERFORDState Representatives Kathleen McCarty (R-Waterford) and Holly Cheeseman (R-East Lyme) attended the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s Summer Gala on July 22nd to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their National Music Theater Conference (NMTC), as well as its founding and artistic director, Paulette Haupt, who is retiring this year.

“The Eugene O’Neill Theater is a magical place right here in my hometown of Waterford,” said Rep. McCarty, who never misses this annual event and this year arranged to present the O’Neill with a citation from the General Assembly. “The O’Neill helps form exceptionally talented artists and produces a wide range of outstanding artistic work recognized on the local, state and national stage. It was truly an honor for me to attend this year’s summer gala and present Paulette with a citation recognizing her life-long accomplishments and extraordinary work at the O’Neill. Paulette is a remarkable artist and a genuinely kind person who deserves many years of happiness in her retirement. She will never be forgotten at the O’Neill. Congratulations again to Paulette and the O’Neill Theater on its 40th anniversary of the NMTC!”

(L to R), Rep. Cheeseman, legislative colleague Senator Paul Formica and Rep. McCarty.

“Art, music and theater are so important to our culture – as a region, as a state and as a nation. I applaud the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and its many programs that play a major role in nurturing and developing new work,” said Rep. Cheeseman. “My constituents and I look forward to enjoying entertainment there for many more years to come.”

The NMTC’s mission is to provide a supportive and challenging environment at the O’Neill Theater for emerging and established creative artists to develop new ideas and stories. Each summer, the program gathers several playwrights, lyricists, and composers to generate fresh, bold work from an array of music theater genres. NMTC has developed more than 120 new musicals including: Nine, Avenue Q, Violet, The Wild Party, and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights.
