The Connecticut Department of Transportation is now working to replace and upgrade existing bridge controls for the moveable bridge on Route 156 over the Niantic River in East Lyme and Waterford.

It was determined that the existing 25-year old bridge control system needed replacement due to its antiquated condition, recent failure and the inability to locate and procure replacement parts. The new control system will incorporate an auxiliary drive backup system. In addition, the existing traffic gates will be replaced in kind, to facilitate a future comprehensive project.

The work has been communicated to the United States Coast Guard, who has granted the Department a temporary deviation from the normal bridge operations. There will be no bridge openings through September 14, 2017 to facilitate this work. It is expected that the project will be completed on November 30, 2017.

Traffic lane restrictions on Route 156 Eastbound and Westbound may become necessary between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, from November 1st to November 21st, and November 27th to November 30th.

Please drive safely through this area. Thank you.
