HARTFORD – Young residents from all over the state traveled to Hartford today to stand against the legalization of recreational marijuana in a press conference hosted by the Connecticut Association of Prevention Professional’s Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM). State Representative Holly Cheeseman (R-37) spoke alongside some of her legislative colleagues in support of their anti-legalization campaign.

“While the Legislature continues to look at the question of whether or not to legalize retail marijuana, I continue to be opposed to it,” said Rep. Cheeseman. “As we receive more and more information from states like Colorado and Washington who have already legalized recreational marijuana, it becomes very clear that this is not a road we should go down in Connecticut. Whether I’m looking at reports regarding increased auto fatalities, emergency room hospitalizations, youth usage, homelessness, poison control calls for children or negative environmental impacts – I have yet to see any good reasons to legalize an already harmful substance. Medical marijuana has provided us with countless good indications that it can help those with protracted medical conditions, but recreational marijuana is a whole different story. Making another addictive substance available to our citizens and youth is irresponsible and immoral. I cannot support making a highly sensitive societal change in our state as a desperate attempt to bring in an uncertain and not-guaranteed increase in revenue.”
