Speaks at Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Legislative Breakfast

NORWICH – For the second year, first-term State Representative Holly Cheeseman (R-37) attended the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) annual Legislative Breakfast at Three Rivers Community College (TRCC). The event was held as an opportunity for students and staff to connect with their state government representatives and for legislators to update Connecticut’s education professionals on what’s happening in Hartford.

“We all look forward to a time when we have a robust state economy with flourishing employment opportunities, and I am confident that we will achieve this goal,” said Rep. Cheeseman. “Until that time comes, however, we are facing challenging times in the State of Connecticut. It is very important that we look closely at the ways we spend our money and look into ways where we can stretch our dollars, whether it is within our municipalities, in education, or other sectors of our economy.

“My job as a State Legislator, the Executive Director of the Children’s Museum in Niantic, and even as a past East Lyme Board of Selectman, is to be fiscally responsible. I ask all of our state colleges and universities to also be good stewards of the tuition dollars you receive and spend it in a fiscally responsible way. We need to find new collaboration methods or take best practices from other areas to use funding in a way that ensures everyone gets the services they need.

“I thank all Three Rivers students – including my elder son – for investing in your future. You are what we need in Connecticut: well-educated citizens. We at the legislature are behind you and will do everything we can to ensure that you have the resources you need to reach your goals. We are currently working on creating very close ties between our local manufacturers and our community colleges, which I hope will bolster your Nuclear Engineering Program, scholarship and partnership with Waterford’s Dominion Millstone Power Station,” said Rep. Cheeseman.

Also in attendance were Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) President Mark Ojakian and Director of Government Relations Sean Bradbury. A major theme of the morning’s discussion focused on putting an end to Connecticut’s opioid abuse epidemic. For more information on CSCU, please visit www.ct.edu.
