The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is planning to renovate the Route 156 bridge over the Niantic River in East Lyme in 2020. It is estimated that the project will cost approximately $15 million – 80 percent of which will be paid with federal funds and 20 percent with state funds.

If you would like to know more about this project, or share a concern, the DOT will be holding a public hearing on Thursday, March 29th at the East Lyme Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. I encourage you to attend and join in on the discussion regarding this plan.

The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate the bridge structure and its architectural, mechanical and electrical components; which include replacement of the wearing surface on the bridge deck, removal and replacement of bridge joints, repainting the superstructure, upgrades to the operator’s control house and repairs to the vertical sheeting of the fender system around the main pier. Some of the mechanical and electrical system components are obsolete with replacement parts unavailable and need to be replaced. This project will provide a 25 to 30 year service life of the bridge.

Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed project are anticipated.

Plans of the proposed project will be on display at the meeting for public review. More detailed information is available at the Department’s Office of Engineering, 2800 Berlin Turnpike, Newington, Connecticut, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays. Anyone wishing to discuss the project may also contact Robert Brown, Project Manager, at (860) 594-3217 or by e-mail at Robert.Brown@ct.gov

The meeting facility is ADA accessible. Language assistance may be requested by contacting the Department’s Office of Communications at (860) 594-3062 at least five business days prior to the meeting.
