HARTFORD – In a press conference held yesterday at the Legislative Office Building, State Representative Holly Cheeseman (R-37) – alongside many of her colleagues in the Animal Welfare Legislative Caucus –announced some major animal welfare initiatives for the 2018 legislative session.

“Animal welfare is a bipartisan issue,” said Rep. Cheeseman. “Anyone who cares about our most vulnerable – whether they are human or four-legged – can find a reason to support our animals. Growing up, my family always had cats but when I got married, my beloved late husband felt that a house was not a home without a dog, so we welcomed dogs into our family. Throughout my life I have taken care of many animals, which taught me the importance of looking after those who can’t speak for themselves. I am proud to be here, with all of my fellow animal welfare supporters, saying ‘Yes,’ we are going to look after them!”

The representatives offered a list of all animal welfare bills submitted for the coming session. With the support of Annie Hornish of the CT Humane Society; Debora Bresch, Senior State Legislative Director at the ASPCA; CT Votes for Animals; and Susan Linker, CEO at Our Companions Animal Rescue, they highlighted three bills that they hope to pass this year:

  1. Ensuring adequate shelter for dogs in extreme weather
  2. Making modifications to accelerated rehabilitation for animal abusers
  3. Implementing recommendations from the Human Animal Welfare Task Force

Rep. Cheeseman encourages her constituents to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding this issue at 1-800-842-1423 or Holly.Cheeseman@housegop.ct.gov.
