We Need to Focus on the State Budget

To the Editor,

Our state government has the responsibility to fund its core functions and programs that support the businesses and residents of Connecticut. This should be the main focus of the legislative business that comes before the House of Representatives. To this point in the Legislative Session, much of the business that has been considered is far from it.

As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I take the budget, and the responsibilities associated with creating one, very seriously. This committee has not put forth a budget option this year, which is extremely abnormal. The confusion of the state budget has caused great concern for many residents and businesses.

I have received many e-mails from you asking me to address certain line-items and programs that are facing cuts. I will continue to fight for the restoration of funding for municipal aid, social services and education. Additionally, the inaction of the legislature is clearly having a detrimental impact on the economic stability for our state’s business climate. For example, Stub Hub just announced that they are closing their Connecticut office after operating for over 12 years here.

The House Republican Caucus has put a viable solution on the table. It closes the $5 billion deficit without tolls or tax increases, and spends $700 million less than the Democrats’ proposal. The time at the State Capitol should be focused on coming up with a long-term plan to restore Connecticut’s fiscal stability.

Sincerely,

Jay Case
State Representative, 63rd District
