HARTFORD- State Rep. Christie Carpino (Cromwell and Portland) had a letter hand delivered to Governor Malloy asking for a state grant through the State Bond Commission to fund the design and build of a new Middlesex County Fire School.

“A new Middlesex County Fire School is essential to maintaining the public safety of every resident in the County. Our firefighters are asked to respond to an ever growing list of dangerous scenarios, and we must provide them with a safe and modern facility to learn the skills we rely on them to deliver,” said Rep. Carpino.

There is currently an unallocated bond balance for the Middlesex County Fire School in the state coffers.

Carpino has been working with her local fire chiefs in Cromwell and Portland as well as the Middlesex County Fire Chiefs Association, Inc. on the initiative for the past year.

Don Quick, former Deputy Chief of the Cromwell Fire Department and current 1st Vice President of the Middlesex County Fire Chiefs Association, Inc. said, “This is a critical need in our region. It will give us the ability to enhance the skills of individual departments and coordinate training among departments.”

A new Fire School would permit fire departments in the greater Middlesex County region an opportunity to obtain lifesaving skills in a safe environment. The school would provide a wide range of training classes from entry level through advanced, from vehicle extrication, rope rescue, fire strategy and tactics, to hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction.
