GREENWICH – State Representative Fred Camillo (R-Greenwich) hosted the third annual Sport Equipment Drive, which began on March 15 and ended on March 29 (Opening Day). All items collected will benefit youngsters who attend the Greenwich Boys & Girls Club to ensure every child who wants to play sports is able to do so regardless of their family’s financial situation.
“I am a lifelong sports enthusiast,” Rep. Camillo said. “I played sports as a youngster and into adulthood, and I want to make sure that every girl and boy in Greenwich has the same opportunity irrespective of cost. Sports equipment is not cheap, which is why many boys and girls are unable to participate. This drive tries to make participating a little more affordable. Thank you to all the Greenwich citizens and donors who made this possible. It proved once again that the collective heart of Greenwich is as big as any place in America. We received some great equipment, and I know the children in our community will greatly appreciate their generosity.”
The drive accepted used gloves, bats, baseballs, basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, cleats, and more at the Greenwich Town Hall and Cos Cob Library. All items were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, which offers recreational programs for local youth. Camillo, who was a member of the club when he was a student, looks forward to the opportunity to give back.
“The club gave me opportunities and life lessons that I keep with me to this very day,” Camillo added. “We will continue to host this event well into the future and I hope we continue to collect more items year after year.”
