Newtown – State Representative Mitch Bolinsky (R-Newtown) visited Newtown Youth and Family Services (NYFS) during an open house event showcasing recent renovations to the facility on Monday, May 15, 2017.

“I love what they’ve done with their facility and that everything is again under one roof!” said Rep. Mitch Bolinsky. “Our community depends on the caring services and programs offered at NYFS. A community’s well-being begins at home, in a community-based setting with a greater, local focus on mental health. NYFS is a huge asset with a powerful presence that does so much more than provide conventional treatment. They coordinate with other community resources and outside-the-box therapy disciplines, in addition to their regularly-scheduled preventative interpersonal and safety programs. Here, early detection and prevention are the focus and they continue to exemplify a program worthy of our support” explained Bolinsky. “As the state budget becomes the elephant in Hartford, it is imperative that we do our best at the legislative level to keep adequate resources available for such programs.”

NYFS Executive Director, Candice Bohr, said, “Our goal is that every child can grow up to be a healthy, well-functioning adult and every person can live life to its fullest potential.”

The recent renovations will provide more space for NYFS to administer the necessary programs and services that the community, as a whole, benefits from. There are nearly 40 dedicated employees at NYFS that willingly take on the responsibility of caring for roughly 325 people per week.

“During May, Mental Health Month and every day for over 30 years we have worked diligently so that every family can access affordable and outstanding mental health care,” Bohr concluded.

Newtown Chief of Police, James Viadero, was also in attendance at the open house. Bolinsky and Chief Viadero spoke about the importance of the services offered by NYFS. The Newtown Police have historically offered their unbridled support for the success of these programs and often are present at NYFS youth safety events.

NYFS is a licensed, non-profit, mental health clinic and youth services bureau dedicated to helping children and families by providing programs, services, activities, counseling, support groups and education throughout the Greater Newtown area.
