VERNON- State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) on Thursday participated as a guest lecturer for a class on state government sponsored by the Center for Learning in Retirement (CLIR) held at the Vernon Cottage on the University of Connecticut Mansfield Depot Campus.

“Understanding the legislative process gives you knowledge about the issues facing our state,” explained Rep. Ackert. “As a small business owner I had to learn quickly about the complexities of state government, and I learn something new every day. Yes, the process can be frustrating at times, but helping constituents with a problem is a very rewarding feeling.”

Rep. Ackert gave a PowerPoint presentation outlining the legislative process on how a bill becomes a law. In addition, he discussed the budgetary process and the limited role the minority party plays when constructing a budget. The group of seniors also asked questions relating to taxes and how to get involved in the legislative process.

“I encourage everyone to visit the Capitol to see first-hand the legislative process,” added Rep. Ackert. “It’s never too late in life to get involved and to advocate for or against an issue you are passionate about.”

CLIR provides meaningful and serious intellectual activities for retirees and other adults from all walks of life, conducted in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. There are no academic requirements.
