HARTFORD- Last week, State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) talked about the importance of early childhood education programs during a panel discussion at the State Capitol for an advocacy day hosted by Local Early Childhood Councils (LECC) from around the state.

“It’s proven that starting education at an early age will greatly improve the long-term success of our students,” said Rep. Ackert, a member of the legislature’s Education Committee. “Making strong investments in education will help our students succeed in their education and in life.”

The policymakers and early education advocates on the panel all agreed on the same thing, LECC’s provide important programs to their local communities that pave the way for a successful life for our children. LECC’s are collaborative groups charged with policy and program planning, system development, cross-sector engagement, leadership, public accountability, and resource allocation for children and families within the community.

“I will be strong advocate against proposals to cut education funding,” added Rep. Ackert. “Instead of putting our budget woes on the backs of children we should take a look at long-term structural policy changes.”

This year, LECC’s are fighting to maintain funding for early childhood programs that serve children throughout the state such as the Office of Early Childhood, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Children and Families, Husky, Care4Kids and Birth to 3.
