Rep. Ackert Joins Ceremony to Welcome New Citizens

HARTFORD- State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) joined local municipal leaders, town employees, family members, and friends at the Rockville Public library to celebrate and welcome men and women from across the globe as part of a naturalization ceremony.

The event welcomed 28 men and women from 17 different countries of origin. Some of the countries include Belize, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, People’s Republic of China, India, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Thailand.

“I am honored to have been a part of today’s celebration and have gotten a chance to watch as these 28 men and women fulfill their dream of becoming a United States citizen,” Rep. Ackert said. “It is particularly special witnessing them pledge their allegiance to our flag for the first time as citizens of this country.”

In order to be eligible for US citizenship via naturalization, you must fill out an application along with meeting the following criteria:
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be a permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years
• Have resided in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years;
• Have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months
• Be a person of good moral character
• Be able to speak, read, write and understand the English language;
• Have knowledge of U.S. government and history and government
Be willing and able to take the Oath of Allegiance

The naturalization process includes testing for the applicants ability to speak English, read English, write in English, and correctly answer 6/10 civics related questions. The civics portion is centered around items in American government.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the United States welcomes anywhere between 700,000 and 750,000 citizens during naturalization ceremonies across the United States and around the world.
