COVENTRY- State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) joined forces with the American Legion Post 52, the Knights of Columbus 4313, and the Boy Scouts to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Flag Day by properly retiring worn-out flags yesterday at the Knight of Columbus Hall.

Over the past month, Rep. Ackert has collected over a hundred flags during his Annual Flag-Collection Drives in Columbia and Coventry.

DSC_1989sized“The flags that were retired today carry the sounds of battle, dedication, courage, patriotism, sacrifice, and victory. They carry the sounds of freedom and they carry the sound of a bugle blowing taps for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” said Rep. Ackert, an Air Force Veteran. “Perhaps, of all the special occasions we celebrate each year, Flag Day, June 14th, stands out among the most important.  We’re not just honoring a flag, we are honoring our country, our government, and the way of life it represents.”

American Legion Commander Manny Rodrigues and the Boy Scouts led the ceremony by reciting the pledge of allegiance, properly folding the flags, and then respectfully retiring the flags.

The Second Continental Congress adopted the first American flag on July 14, 1777, and President Woodrow Wilson declared June 14 to be Flag Day in 1916. National Flag Day was then established by an Act of Congress in August 1949.

If you were unable to donate your worn-out flags, please contact American Legion Commander Manny Rodrigues at (860) 541-1840 or MarineVeteran@Charter.net.
