Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is a time to remember those brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms. Over the weekend, I will be marching in a number of parades in the 8th District. I hope you will join me at the following parades to honor the fallen:

Columbia Memorial Day Parade

The Columbia Memorial Day Program starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Town Green on Monday, May 30th.

Coventry Memorial Day Parade

The Coventry Memorial Day Parade starts at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 30th, from Robertson School at Cross Street, and proceeds to the Veterans Green for a brief service and continues down Lake Street to Main and ends at Bradbury Lane.

Tolland Memorial Day Parade

The Town of Tolland will hold its 25th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Service on Sunday, May 29th at 1:00 p.m. Parade units will line up at noon in the Preschool of the Arts/Tolland Senior Center parking lot on Route 74. Held rain or shine, the parade will step off at 1:00 p.m. and travel along the historic Tolland Green, turn right at Town Hall onto Old Post Road and end at the Tolland Intermediate School. The route is 7/10s of a mile. A solemn ceremony will follow on the school lawn.

Vernon Memorial Day Parade

The 2016 Vernon Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 30. The parade, sponsored by the local American Legion post and the Vernon Parks and Recreation Department, is slated to step off at 10:00 a.m. from Northeast School. Following the ceremony at Grove Hill, the parade will continue to Central Park via Grove Street, turn left at the intersection of Grove and East Main Street and arrive at Central Park at about 11:00 a.m. A closing ceremony will take place in Central Park to honor fallen veterans and all those who have served the United States in all branches of the military.

Flag Day

I will also be hosting a flag collection with the American Legion Post #52 and Knights of Columbus Council 4313 for residents to properly retire their worn American flags.

The collected flags will be retired during a ceremony on Flag Day, Tuesday, June 14th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall,138 Snake Hill Road, Coventry.
