In the last week or two, you may have received offers from licensed electricity suppliers to sign up for electricity rates between 7 and 9.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This number may seem low, but starting July 1st the United Illuminating Company (UI) and Eversource will be dropping their rate to 6.6 cents per kWh.

Please be aware that you have two options when deciding to purchase electricity. The first option is to use the Standard Service provided by UI and Eversource. Under option number one, the Standard Service rates change on July 1st and January 1st, and the Standard Service rates are announced about seven weeks before the rates are effective: May 10th and November 10th. The second option you can choose from is to use a licensed supplier to provide your electricity, which may lower your cost.

You can compare Standard Service Generation rates to offers from licensed suppliers on Connecticut’s official Rate Board. Click here to access the Rate Board.

I will also be hosting two informative workshops about lowering your electric bill in Coventry and Columbia with representatives from the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) and Eversource. Please bring a copy of your electric bill to check your current generation rate.
